Welcome to our Southwest 2019 Self Flying Guided Air Tour Page. This will be a spectacular adventure from LaJunta, Colorado to St George Utah flown from Saturday 28 September 2019 to Saturday 4 October 2019. We hope you will join us this fall and have your cameras ready for the fall colors and gorgeous mountain beauty. Here is a brief description of the activities and sightseeing we have planned for this tour. On this tour we plan on spending time at 7 National Parks in the western part of the United States. If you have not flown in the mountains with us before or you would like a review for those who have flown with us before, plan on arriving one day early on Friday 27 September for our Mountain Flying ground school. The course is free for those flying this tour with us; however, you will have to add a nights lodging to the tour.
Saturday 28 September
Arrive in LaJunta, Colorado by 11:00 AM. We will start off the tour with a visit to Bent’s Fort. This was a trading fort back in the day. I am sure you will enjoy a treasure missed by many who do not realize its existence.
Sunday 29 September
Today we will fly in to the mountains going over sand dunes and then the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We will land in Delta, Colorado and spend the afternoon observing the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Have you ever been driving in the mountains and see the signs that say 6% grade ahead? Well you may get a kick when you see the sign and we go over the edge that says 15% grade ahead! Yes, we use low gear going down that hill.
Monday 30 September
Today we will fly to Moab, Utah seeing the desert in all of its glory. The afternoon will be spent in Canyonlands National Park. This is a sight to see with such great rock formations. The evening will be a Chuck-wagon dinner followed by a night boat tour on the Colorado River as they light up the spectacular rock formations and canyon walls as we float down the river.
Tuesday 1 October
Today we will stay in Moab in the morning going to Arches National Park. Be ready to take a lot of pictures today of the different arches through out the park. Then we will fly to Page, Arizona to watch the fantastic sunset.
Wednesday 2 October
Today is our non-flying day. We will do another boat tour this time on Lake Powell to Rainbow Bridge. Due to low water at this time this is an 8-hour tour with 1.5 hours at Rainbow Bridge. It is also a ¾ mile hike each way from the shore to Rainbow Bridge so please bring good hiking shoes for this part of the tour. I think you will have a magnificent day in Northern Arizona today.
Thursday 3 October
Today we will fly to Bryce Canyon. This is a fantastic National Park with more of a deeper red color in the rocks. We will go to the visitor center and then into the park. If you are up to it there is a wonderful hike that takes about 2 hours. You will descend about 1000 feet and then get to climb back up the 1000 feet, so start hitting the stair stepper! 1000 feet in the airplane is so much easier.
Friday 4 October
This is our last flying day as we work our way to Hurricane, Utah. After parking the planes, we will head over to Zion National Park. Again, this is spectacular to see and we will have another nice hike in the park. As we host the farewell dinner that evening, we hope you have had a great experience filled with many memories.
Saturday 5 October
Our tour is now over and it is time to start back home or on another adventure. I know we are a long way from where the tour started and if anyone would like some ideas or flight planning help getting back east out of the mountains, we are happy to work with you. A recommendation back east would be to go from Hurricane to Cortez, Colorado and visit Mesa Verde National Park. This is well worth seeing if you have not been there. The next leg would be from Cortez to Santa Fe, NM. Leaving Santa Fe, to cross the last mountains is very easy. If you have not spent time in Santa Fe it is a wonderful town and the Plaza is a must to see. Guys watch your credit cards if the gals start seeing the custom jewelry sold in the plaza!
This tour is planned for a minimum of 5 aircraft and maximum of 7 aircraft.
