American Air Tour
Welcome to our Montana Big Sky Self Flying Guided Air Tour Page. This will be a spectacular tour in Western Montana. The group will be limited to five aircraft and the tour includes our one day Mountain Flying Ground school course. We will need 4 aircraft to sign up to fly this tour.
Sunday 29 August 2021
We will start this tour by meeting in Hardin, MT (OOU), approximately 40 miles East of Billings MT at 11:00 AM Mountain time. We will not be staying here but will meet here. Our first event will be to drive about 18 miles south of Hardin where we will tour The Battle of the Little Bighorn. A great book to read on the subject is “Custer’s Last Stand” by Nathaniel Philbrick. Knowing all the players involved will make this historic site much more meaningful to you as well as give you a better picture of what really took place during the battle.
After a two hour tour we will go back to Hardin, and fly to Billings MT. The late afternoon we will start on the mountain flying ground school offered by Blue Goose Aviation. If you are the pilot and have not flown one of our mountain tours or courses this is a required course for you.
Monday 30 August 2021
We will have our morning flight brief at breakfast then depart for the airport. Today we will start by flying west toward Livingston, MT then south over Yellowstone National Park. The views are great but we will follow all the aviation rules on flying over the park. As we leave the park to the west we will stop in at Three Forks, MT we will then tour the Lewis and Clark Caverns. I have visited many caverns in the United States and these are still my favorite. After the tour we will then fly to Helena, MT to spend the evening.
Tuesday 31 August 2021
After having breakfast we will drive to the “Gates of the Mountains”. This is a wonderful boat excursion on the Missouri River, The tall dark walls will amaze you as our guide talks about the river, Lewis and Clark, and the Mann Gulch fire of 1949. Lessons learned from that fire are still taught to todays fire fighters to hopefully prevent such a tragic event to happen again. After our tour it is back to the airport for a beautiful flight to Polson, MT. The evening is planned for a trip to the Bison Range where we will see Antelope, Mule Deer, Elk, Bison and hopefully Black bear or Big Horn Sheep.
Wednesday 1 September 2021
Todays flight will take us over Flathead Lake, the largest natural lake west of the Mississippi River, up to Crystal Lakes. This is a private airstrip with a very interesting aviation museum. After our tour of the museum we will fly east toward Glacier National Park, over a couple of backcountry airstrips, and back to Polson. You will then have some time to yourself to tour Polson, go to the Miracle of America museum or just relax.
Thursday 2 September 2021
Today is a non flying day as we will drive to Glacier National Park, where we will take the “Going to the Sun Road” and visit my favorite part of the park “Many Glaciers”. We will plan on spending the entire day at the Park.
Friday 3 September 2021
Today we will fly over Lincoln, MT, Rogers Pass and into Great Falls, MT. The afternoon will be spent at the Lewis and Clark Discovery Center the Charlie Russel Art Museum and the Malmstrom AFB Aviation Museum. This is a full day to wrap up our tour. We will spend the night in Great Falls and get everyone back to the airport to start home or on to your next adventure.
We hope this exciting, scenic tour meets all your expectations and creates memories of Montana that will last a life time.
